Soaring is a collection of brief essays that can help you grow in your faith and experience more of God’s love, peace, and joy. Written by a Christian psychologist and life coach, these words of wisdom and life lessons were gleaned from thirty years of looking to God for guidance while helping others navigate life’s challenges. Grounded in biblical truth, Soaring takes the reader on a series of encounters with Christ and encourages self-discovery and growth. It is a book to be savored and digested in small bites, as it leads us into the presence of the Great Counselor who loves us intimately beyond measure. Praise for Soaring “You will not only find profound truth between the covers of this book, you will discover poetic truth flowing from a heart of compassion. May God richly bless and transform all who read it.” —Charley Heidbrier, Christian artist, songwriter, and minister “As you read these chapters, heart-change happens, like a spontaneous act of grace. Soaring With Eagles is a book of devotional meditations upon the book of James. It helps us to deal with our trouble and suffering. I want to be in the line in Heaven, waiting to talk to James about his book. I want to recite my heartbreaks and ask James, "Should I have been happy about these?" I already anticipate his response, "Yes, for suffering stretches you and brings all the character that God has already placed within you to the surface, or it diminishes you because you do not see its intended purpose and accept it." The growth that suffering awakens in us will produce real faith, which shows itself in ministry to the poor, disenfranchised, downtrodden and needy people around us. This book is for all those who want to become real Christians instead of plastic Christians. All who yearn for true greatness should benefit from reading Soaring With Eagles. Readers should learn to laugh when suffering comes their way, knowing that suffering can be a gift from God. Soaring With Eagles should prepare readers for the time when life tumbles in. And, when it does, we will be drawn toward God instead of retreating away from Him.

Soaring in Heavenly Places was written because of a dream, In the dream some words were spoken to me from the Lord. He said he was going to “enlarge” my territory. As I began seeking the Lord about the dream, he began to enlarge (enlighten) me with his word. I realized that the dream had a “spiritual” meaning, and not a “natural” meaning. God began revealing himself to me in a greater measure, and caused me to soar in heavenly places in the spirit. He began to enlarge my territory (from within). A greater understanding of the Word of God began to take place in my mind. As I began writing, God began to “add” or “expand” the knowledge of the Word.

Readers! Each of us has episodes in life that are worth putting pen to paper, and more so worth the time of reflection as we grow in age. I am sure you are thinking about those episodes at this moment. However, as you think, consider how your episodes could encourage someone else, and create a mindset for personal growth and development. Mountains are hard to climb, but mountain climbers continue to climb with a sense of ease. Difficulties can be overcome through knowledge of someone’s experience, even through turmoil. With that in mind, I have penned Soaring through Turmoil as an autobiography, but more so to spur courage and generate personal reflection with an aim to drive personal growth and development for readers. Soaring through Turmoil will give readers an opportunity to stop, think, and write their thoughts after each chapter to build a cognitive structure for empowerment—a yes-you-can notion. The book allows for experiences to be used for readers to learn about the persistence and courage of an individual’s struggles through his early lifespan of turmoil but continues to accomplish his dreams. Therefore, Soaring through Turmoil is about the author’s experiences, but written for the readers’ encouragement through all challenges. Not all readers will identify with the author’s experiences, but some readers may be experiencing challenges, and need to be convinced that there is light at the end of the tunnel. As such, the book will be beneficial to a wide cross-section of demography, including children (with parental guidance). Adolescents in the inner city struggling with poverty, domestic violence, and truancy, would also benefit from the book. As a mental health professional, I would recommend Soaring through Turmoil to be used in individual therapy and group therapy. The reflection page after each chapter will be an excellent opportunity for therapeutic activities during therapy sessions.

Then, to stop this problem, Captain Bunn takes the reader step-by-step through exercises that permanently and automatically control these feelings. From a respected educator who has advised Hillary Clinton and Cory Booker on scholastic issues, a “rare book that can bring tears to your eyes while showing the way to deep and meaningful social change” (New York Times bestselling author William Pollack). David Banks knows a few things about at-risk boys. In 2004, he petitioned New York City’s mayor to allow an all-boys public school to open in one of the most troubled districts in the country, the South Bronx. He had a point to prove: when rituals that boys are innately drawn to are combined with college prep-level instruction and community mentorship, even the most challenging students can succeed. The result? The Eagle Academy for Young Men—the first all-boys public high school in New York City in more than thirty years—has flourished and has been successfully replicated in other boroughs and states. In Soar, Banks shares the experiences of individual kids from the Eagle Academy as well as his own personal story. He reveals the specific approach he and his team use to drive students, from tapping into their natural competitiveness and peer-sensitivity, to providing rituals that mimic their instinctual need for hierarchy and fraternal camaraderie, to finding teachers who know firsthand the obstacles these students face. Results-oriented and clear-eyed about the challenges and promises of educating boys at risk, Soar is “a must-read for those concerned with the welfare of young men” (Kirkus Reviews).
