“Hart’s argument that we need to drastically revise our current view of illegal drugs is both powerful and timely . . . when it comes to the legacy of this country’s war on drugs, we should all share his outrage.” —The New York Times Book Review From one of the world's foremost experts on the subject, a powerful argument that the greatest damage from drugs flows from their being illegal, and a hopeful reckoning with the possibility of their use as part of a responsible and happy life Dr. Carl L. Hart, Ziff Professor at Columbia University and former chair of the Department of Psychology, is one of the world's preeminent experts on the effects of so-called recreational drugs on the human mind and body. Dr. Hart is open about the fact that he uses drugs himself, in a happy balance with the rest of his full and productive life as a researcher and professor, husband, father, and friend. In Drug Use for Grown-Ups, he draws on decades of research and his own personal experience to argue definitively that the criminalization and demonization of drug use--not drugs themselves--have been a tremendous scourge on America, not least in reinforcing this country's enduring structural racism. Dr. Hart did not always have this view. He came of age in one of Miami's most troubled neighborhoods at a time when many ills were being laid at the door of crack cocaine. His initial work as a researcher was aimed at proving that drug use caused bad outcomes. But one problem kept cropping up: the evidence from his research did not support his hypothesis. From inside the massively well-funded research arm of the American war on drugs, he saw how the facts did not support the ideology. The truth was dismissed and distorted in order to keep fear and outrage stoked, the funds rolling in, and Black and brown bodies behind bars. Drug Use for Grown-Ups will be controversial, to be sure: the propaganda war, Dr. Hart argues, has been tremendously effective. Imagine if the only subject of any discussion about driving automobiles was fatal car crashes. Drug Use for Grown-Ups offers a radically different vision: when used responsibly, drugs can enrich and enhance our lives. We have a long way to go, but the vital conversation this book will generate is an extraordinarily important step.

Cellular agriculture, also called lab-grown food, promises to provide alternative food options to current agriculture practices. Cellular agriculture is food grown in laboratories and bioreactors rather than on fields, relying on the cultivation of cells under controlled conditions, with minimal use of natural resources and lower greenhouse gas emission costs than in traditional practices. It gives us the prospect of consuming the same foods such as dairy ice cream or a burger. And it can further broaden the variety of textures, flavors, nutrition, and health-promoting aspects that food can deliver. Cellular Agriculture: Lab-Grown Foods gives an overview of the broad range of approaches to cellular agriculture, the current state of scale and regulations, and the results it brings about in terms of environmental footprint and consumer attitudes. Cellular Agriculture: Lab-Grown Foods was organized by Solar Foods, a food-tech company that develops a cell-based food protein produced from CO2 and electricity. A fruitful collaboration with VTT Technical Research Center of Finland Ltd allowed conceptualizing and streamlining of the written and visual content in the book.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The former First Lady, author of Becoming, and producer and star of Waffles + Mochi tells the inspirational story of the White House Kitchen Garden and how gardens can transform our lives and the health of our communities. Early in her tenure as First Lady, despite being a novice gardener, Michelle Obama planted a kitchen garden on the White House’s South Lawn. To her delight, she watched as fresh vegetables, fruit, and herbs sprouted from the ground. Soon the White House Kitchen Garden inspired a new conversation all across the country about the food we feed our families and the impact it has on the nutrition and well-being of our children. In American Grown, Mrs. Obama invites you inside the White House Kitchen Garden, from the first planting to the satisfaction of the seasonal harvest. She reveals her early worries and struggles—would the new plants even grow?—and her joy as lettuce, corn, tomatoes, collards and kale, sweet potatoes and rhubarb flourished in the freshly tilled soil. She shares the stories of other gardens that have moved and inspired her on her journey across the nation. And she offers what she learned about planting your own backyard, school, or community garden. American Grown features: • a behind-the-scenes look at every season of the garden’s growth • unique recipes created by White House chefs • striking original photographs that bring the White House garden to life • a fascinating history of community gardens in the United States From a modern-day vegetable truck that brings fresh produce to underserved communities in Chicago, to Houston office workers who make the sidewalk bloom, to a New York City school that created a scented garden for the visually impaired, to a garden in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, that devotes its entire harvest to those less fortunate, American Grown isn’t just the story of a single garden. It’s a celebration of the bounty of our nation and a reminder of what we can all grow together.

Most economists would agree that a thriving economy is synonymous with GDP growth. The more we produce and consume, the higher our living standard and the more resources available to the public. This means that our current era, in which growth has slowed substantially from its postwar highs, has raised alarm bells. But should it? Is growth actually the best way to measure economic success—and does our slowdown indicate economic problems? The counterintuitive answer Dietrich Vollrath offers is: No. Looking at the same facts as other economists, he offers a radically different interpretation. Rather than a sign of economic failure, he argues, our current slowdown is, in fact, a sign of our widespread economic success. Our powerful economy has already supplied so much of the necessary stuff of modern life, brought us so much comfort, security, and luxury, that we have turned to new forms of production and consumption that increase our well-being but do not contribute to growth in GDP. In Fully Grown, Vollrath offers a powerful case to support that argument. He explores a number of important trends in the US economy: including a decrease in the number of workers relative to the population, a shift from a goods-driven economy to a services-driven one, and a decline in geographic mobility. In each case, he shows how their economic effects could be read as a sign of success, even though they each act as a brake of GDP growth. He also reveals what growth measurement can and cannot tell us—which factors are rightly correlated with economic success, which tell us nothing about significant changes in the economy, and which fall into a conspicuously gray area. Sure to be controversial, Fully Grown will reset the terms of economic debate and help us think anew about what a successful economy looks like.

Too many people have surrendered to the belief that dissatisfaction, neglect, infidelity, abuse, disrespect, conflict, exploitation and betrayal are natural, normal, and unavoidable characteristics of romantic relationships and even marriage. We are presented with a choice: relationships that don’t last and relationships that do, as long as participants are willing to endure inevitable suffering, mistreatment, and victimization, usually at the hands of one another. Loving in the Grown Zone is a rejection of that thinking. It is testament to the authors’ belief that while there may be no such thing as a perfect relationship, that is not justification for accepting anything less than healthy relationships. No one is required to accept mistreatment as the price of a loving, safe, and sustainable relationship of honor, esteem, and respect. Furthermore, establishing such healthy, resilient, and fulfilling relationships are not a matter of luck or chance, but of intention, learnable skills and practices, and commitment to personal growth. Loving in the Grown Zone urges you to learn those skills and commit to those practices, including recognizing the difference between the attractors that motivate us to initiate romantic relationships and the sustainers required to ensure that such relationships are healthy, safe, and affirming for both partners.

The past two decades have seen rapid advances in the technology used to produce pot plants. Glasshouses designed and orientated to give maxi mum light transmission, fully automatic heating and ventilating systems, carbon dioxide enrichment of the atmosphere, controlled photoperiods using automatic blackouts and incandescent lamps which enable plants such as chrysanthemum to be flowered at any time of the year, mist propagation techniques, chemical growth regulators which control the height of plants, automatic watering and feeding systems, etc.: these are only some of the developments which have transformed pot plant culture. There have also been many changes in the composts and systems used to grow the plants. Mineral soils, which formed the basis of the John Innes composts, are now either too expensive or too difficult to obtain in suitable quality and sufficient quantity. Consequently the grower has been forced to seek other materials such as peat, perlite, vermiculite, plastic foam, shredded bark, etc. New types of fertilizers, new methods of heat sterilization and new chemical sterilizing agents are also being used.

home grown is the 16th book in the Garth Ryland mystery series that has taken him from the graves of Navoe Cemetery to the wilds of Mitchell’s Woods to the cave of Matotamah to the edge of Wampler’s Pit, and in and out of the arms of some of Oakalla’s most beautiful, intriguing, and dangerous women. Called “an exemplary series hero” by Publishers Weekly, Ryland lives and works in the small town of Oakalla, Wisconsin (“Lake Woebegone made sinister”) where passions run high and secrets go deep, and nothing is ever quite as simple as it seems—where every thread runs at seemingly loose ends to a knot of deception and death. John Borden, an amiable misfit known to most of the locals as “Chilly Willy,” is missing. He left on foot for his night job at the hospital, but never arrived. Town marshal, Cecil Hardwick, is on his way out of town to a convention at the very moment former FBI agent, Chuck Holden, arrives unannounced in Ryland’s newspaper office with the information that an assassin, code name “Punisher,” is likely living there in Oakalla. Holden has been after him for years, and now in retirement has made it his mission to bring him to justice. Ryland’s search for John Borden first takes him to Robert Pickering’s house, where Borden has been living in the basement for the past few years and where Pickering is in the last stages of emphysema. Ryland next visits Jake McKennis, a bear of a man with a short fuse and a dislike of Borden, and whose son, Ronny, is Borden’s best friend. From there Ryland goes to Adams County Hospital and has an altercation with Lynn Saylor, a journeyman nurse with a hulking presence and a suspect past. Then the crank calls start at work and at home. Then Ronny McKennis runs away from home to a place that only Ryland, at his peril, knows. Then Lynn Saylor and Chuck Holden hurriedly leave town, but not before Ryland learns something about each that will put him in harm’s way, and not before he takes what might be the last ride of his life. In Home Grown, Ryland’s search for truth again leads him and his housekeeper, Ruth, down converging paths that each would rather not travel, but are helpless to alter, until they intersect at a place perilously close to the heart.

Why isn't life everything we expected it to be? And why doesn't our faith resolve our frustrations and problems? Kevin Myers, the founding pastor of 12Stone Church, a congregation of more than 30,000 active attenders near Atlanta, believes the reason we don't experience a transformed life is that we fail to grow up spiritually. We focus on developing physically, intellectually, emotionally, and financially, yet our faith remains immature and anemic. In this powerful new book, Myers offers a deep yet simple roadmap to a grown-up faith through understanding the whole context of the Bible, developing spiritual intimacy with God, and gratefully embracing holy obedience. As you understand the Bible and the big picture of God's story with humanity, you begin to find answers to life's most compelling questions. This book is dedicated to the unrelenting pursuit of Biblical truth concerning our apostolic founders’ vision of Christ’s interactive, maturing church. As the early apostles were committed to the growing-up of each individual disciple of the Body of Christ, so this book is written to challenge and exhort all believers and followers of Christ to not settle for the same-old predictable church style of stale hierarchal leadership with mediocre followers and results. If the reader would be willing to humble oneself and dare to become boldly unchained and unafraid of embracing what is presented in this book, through scriptural truth, then a much greater understanding of the goals of early Christian discipleship could be greatly realized for the full stature and steely strength of united saints in these most desperate of latter times.
