Act One is the autobiography of Moss Hart, an American playwright and theatre director. Born into impoverished circumstances—his father was often unemployed—Hart left school at age twelve for a series of odd jobs that included being an entertainment director at a Catskills summer resort. Hart’s big break came in 1930 with the Broadway hit Once in a Lifetime, written with George Kaufman. The two would collaborate again on You Can’t Take It With You (1936) and The Man Who Came To Dinner (1939). You Can’t Take It With You won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1937, and the 1938 film version, directed by Frank Capra, won Oscars for both Best Picture and Best Director. Act One was adapted for a 1963 film starring George Hamilton, and for a 2014 stage production starring Tony Shalhoub and Andrea Martin. HarperTorch brings great works of non-fiction and the dramatic arts to life in digital format, upholding the highest standards in ebook production and celebrating reading in all its forms. A classic work of American theatre, based on the Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, which pitted Clarence Darrow against William Jennings Bryan in defense of a schoolteacher accused of teaching the theory of evolution The accused was a slight, frightened man who had deliberately broken the law. His trial was a Roman circus. The chief gladiators were two great legal giants of the century. Like two bull elephants locked in mortal combat, they bellowed and roared imprecations and abuse. The spectators sat uneasily in the sweltering heat with murder in their hearts, barely able to restrain themselves. At stake was the freedom of every American. One of the most moving and meaningful plays of our generation. Praise for Inherit the Wind "A tidal wave of a drama."—New York World-Telegram And Sun “Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee were classic Broadway scribes who knew how to crank out serious plays for thinking Americans. . . . Inherit the Wind is a perpetually prescient courtroom battle over the legality of teaching evolution. . . . We’re still arguing this case–all the way to the White House.”—Chicago Tribune “Powerful . . . a crackling good courtroom play . . . [that] provides two of the juiciest roles in American theater.”—Copley News Service “[This] historical drama . . . deserves respect.”—The Columbus Dispatch

This is a collection of three plays all written in 2008. Taxi is a collection of three one act plays based on the minibus taxi industry in South Africa. Each act deals with a common place scenario that many commuters face in their daily lives and examines the heart warming and sometimes tragic events that unfold on the roads of South Africa. Hangman is a dramatic play set in an undisclosed country where unsettling events start a chain reaction to which both a local community and aid agency workers must respond. Drawing on recent events from many places around the world, the play circles themes relating to responsibility of individuals versus the responsibility of the world as a whole. But I Thought You Said... is a comedic play set in London, following a married couple Greta and Frederick through their daily lives, as they communicate, miscommunicate and negotiate the journey that is married life.

A haunting examination of groupthink and mass hysteria in a rural community The place is Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, an enclave of rigid piety huddled on the edge of a wilderness. Its inhabitants believe unquestioningly in their own sanctity. But in Arthur Miller's edgy masterpiece, that very belief will have poisonous consequences when a vengeful teenager accuses a rival of witchcraft—and then when those accusations multiply to consume the entire village. First produced in 1953, at a time when America was convulsed by a new epidemic of witch-hunting, The Crucible brilliantly explores the threshold between individual guilt and mass hysteria, personal spite and collective evil. It is a play that is not only relentlessly suspenseful and vastly moving but that compels readers to fathom their hearts and consciences in ways that only the greatest theater ever can. "A drama of emotional power and impact" —New York Post

With the loosening of constraints on what may be discussed and portrayed in plays dealing with homosexuality, similar relaxation should be expected for heterosexual works. Within the bounds of good taste, of course. And taste, like time, alters. Hopefully, the time is now. *** In an age of miniaturization, the one-act play should find itself at home. People do attend concertized etudes, most often for the piano, and that is precisely what a one-act play is-an etude. Sometimes it's a character study, others a piece of action, still others a complete little story, and several strung together selectively can make a program.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning tragedy of a salesman’s deferred American dream Ever since it was first performed in 1949, Death of a Salesman has been recognized as a milestone of the American theater. In the person of Willy Loman, the aging, failing salesman who makes his living riding on a smile and a shoeshine, Arthur Miller redefined the tragic hero as a man whose dreams are at once insupportably vast and dangerously insubstantial. He has given us a figure whose name has become a symbol for a kind of majestic grandiosity—and a play that compresses epic extremes of humor and anguish, promise and loss, between the four walls of an American living room. "By common consent, this is one of the finest dramas in the whole range of the American theater." —Brooks Atkinson, The New York Times "So simple, central, and terrible that the run of playwrights would neither care nor dare to attempt it." —Time

Graphic novel in 3 volumes with over 270 pages. Woman in the Moon is a 1929 German science fiction film directed by Fritz Lang. Written by Thea von Harbou (his wife at the time) in collaboration with Lang. The visionary scientist Professor Mannfeldt wrote a treatise claiming that there was likely to be a lot of gold on the Moon, for which he was ridiculed by his colleagues. Your friend Helius recognizes the value of the teacher's work. However, an unscrupulous businessman named Turner also has an interest in the professor's theory. Meanwhile, Helius' assistant Windegger announces his engagement to Helius' assistant Friede, whom he, Helius, secretly loves. After meeting Professor Mannfeldt, Helius is assaulted by gang thugs. They steal the research Professor Mannfeldt had entrusted to Helius and also raid Helius' house, taking other valuable material. Turner then presents Helius with an ultimatum: they know he's planning a trip to the Moon; either he includes him, or he will sabotage your rocket. Explosions... Twists... Lots of action... Several curiosities surround this work, one of them is that it was believed at the time that the Moon had a breathable atmosphere (according to the theories of the Danish astronomer Peter Andreas Hansen, mentioned at the beginning of the film), so when I watched the film I realized how poetic it can be. something as surreal as being able to breathe on the moon. It was also the first time that a staged rocket was shown. It was the last silent film directed by Fritz Lang and decidedly a reference for filmmakers to come later.
