To celebrate the release of her novel Barefoot on Baker Street, Charlotte Anne Walters undertook the task of reading and reviewing one of the original Sherlock Holmes short stories every day until she had completed all 56. The reviews were posted daily on her blog and attracted viewers from all over the world. The reviews are full of humour and Holmesian insight, ending in a score out of ten for each story. This book contains all 56 blogs plus additional material including reviews of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's four Holmes novels. Although it was a pleasure for a life-long Holmes admirer to re-visit the stories, trying to do this on top of holding down a busy full-time job and family commitments was a big challenge - resulting in some stressful but comical moments detailed in the blogs. Even Mr Walters couldn't resist throwing in a few comments of his own. Charlotte is donating all her royalties from this publication to the Undershaw Preservation Trust, a charity striving to protect and restore the former home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - saveundershaw.com.

For fifty-six days, four women left their ‘regular lives’, homes, families and comfort, to ride their motorbikes through scenic landscapes, inhospitable terrain and diverse regions. In this process, they covered 17,000 kilometres through six countries. What inspired them to follow this dangerous, and at times maddening, adventure trail? In Road to Mekong, Piya Bahadur recounts her once-in-a-lifetime journey through Southeast Asia. With little prior experience in expeditions of this nature, the group successfully planned and executed an exhilarating trip from Hyderabad, through the east Indian coast and the northeast of India, weaving through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, along the river Mekong, and finally to Cambodia. By the time they returned, the lives of these audacious women had changed forever. Piya takes the reader along on her travels through places rarely visited by the itinerant Indian and shares the new world that unfolds as she journeys from being a working mother constrained by her own inhibitions to a confident traveller accepting of whatever adventures life has to offer. ‘The inspirational and adventurous journey of these four women across nations and through thousands of kilometres makes for an exhilarating read. The book should lead many more people to explore India and it’s scenic places’ MEENAKSHI SHARMA, Director General for Tourism, Incredible India

A revealing portrait of the end of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's life and presidency, shedding new light on how he made his momentous final policy decisions The first hundred days of FDR's presidency are justly famous, often viewed as a period of political action without equal in American history. Yet as historian David B. Woolner reveals, the last hundred might very well surpass them in drama and consequence. Drawing on new evidence, Woolner shows how FDR called on every ounce of his diminishing energy to pursue what mattered most to him: the establishment of the United Nations, the reinvigoration of the New Deal, and the possibility of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. We see a president shorn of the usual distractions of office, a man whose sense of personal responsibility for the American people bore heavily upon him. As Woolner argues, even in declining health FDR displayed remarkable political talent and foresight as he focused his energies on shaping the peace to come.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The #1 New York Times bestselling author of World War Z is back with “the Bigfoot thriller you didn’t know you needed in your life, and one of the greatest horror novels I’ve ever read” (Blake Crouch, author of Dark Matter and Recursion). As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined . . . until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing—and too earth-shattering in its implications—to be forgotten. In these pages, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it. Kate’s is a tale of unexpected strength and resilience, of humanity’s defiance in the face of a terrible predator’s gaze, and, inevitably, of savagery and death. Yet it is also far more than that. Because if what Kate Holland saw in those days is real, then we must accept the impossible. We must accept that the creature known as Bigfoot walks among us—and that it is a beast of terrible strength and ferocity. Part survival narrative, part bloody horror tale, part scientific journey into the boundaries between truth and fiction, this is a Bigfoot story as only Max Brooks could chronicle it—and like none you’ve ever read before. Praise for Devolution “Delightful . . . [A] tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “The story is told in such a compelling manner that horror fans will want to believe and, perhaps, take the warning to heart.”—Booklist (starred review)

For more than 60 years, the Californian Family Hinman has exercised a very considerable influence on the development and practice of the highest grade of urology, not only in the American West but worldwide. The leitmotiv of the Hinman School has been honest and thoughtful consideration of the problems of the genitourinary system gone awry. Character is the quintessence of the Hinmans. This virtue distinguishes the present volume on benign pros tatic hypertrophy assembled and edited by Frank Hinman, Jr. I first came under the spell of Frank Hinman, Sr. via his classic studies of renal counterbalance. In brief, in an experimental animal the ureter of one kidney was ligated and the subsequent renal hypertrophy of its contrala teral mate was studied quantitatively from anatomic and functional stand points. There were two central questions in the Hinman study: How does a normal kidney of an experimental animal recognize that its load has been doubled abruptly? What is the signal for renal hypertrophy? Benign hypertrophy of the prostate is quite different from compensatory hypertrophy of the kidney. It is now known that benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) is not a hypertrophy but a benign tumor consisting of a collection of spheroids of micro- and macrodimensions. In technical terms BPH is an adenofibromyoma. Perusal of the present volume will reveal many fascinating facets of BPH of particular interest to urologists and others with an investigative bent of BPH does not occur in children. BPH occurs as a medical rarity in mind.
